The northern part of Danes Moss, between Moss Lane, Congleton Road and the railway line, is an area of outstanding wildlife value. Its numerous habitats provide living, feeding, and breeding space for at least 1,400 species of mammals, birds (including the amazingly rare Willow Tit), insects, and plants - over 60 of which are protected under UK law.
The whole site sits on top of the largest area of lowland peat in Cheshire which, in some parts, is over five metres deep, making it an enormous store of carbon and a critical bulwark against the impacts of climate change.
Unfortunately, this incredibly valuable site is the subject of plans to build 950 houses, a supermarket, commercial units and a small school, plus a distributor road.
From the outset, Macc Wild Network has supported the Save Danes Moss campaign to conserve the site and has helped develop a Vision for its future use as a public park. We are currently working on a cost plan for the project, including a natural capital assessment of its value as a community asset.
If you would like to find out more about Danes Moss, the campaign to save it or the alternative vision for its future, please contact us and we will get back to you!
